Challenge
The tech industry has a massive talent gap, yet millions of potential candidates feel "direction-blind." While 7.5 million US adults are interested in tech, 43% report that it feels out of reach due to fears of complexity, cost, and a lack of clear pathways. CompTIA needed a campaign that didn't just sell a product, but also emotionally validated and supported the user's journey as they transitioned into a new career.
Solution
Instead of using standard stock photography which can feel cold and corporate, I developed a narrative-driven "graphic novel" campaign. By visualizing the "Hero’s Journey" of a career-switcher, we transformed abstract certifications into a tangible bridge between a stagnant current job and a future-proof career.
Strategy & User Journey
The strategy focused on the "Tech-Intent" audience, individuals aged 25–55 who are ready to pivot but paralyzed by the "how".
Objective: Move users from "Latent Interest" to "Active Consideration" by demystifying the entry points.
The Hook: Acknowledge the pain of the current situation (low pay, lack of flexibility) before introducing the solution.
The Path: Visualizing the customer journey from the initial spark of interest ("I need a change") to the specific action of certification ("This is my proof of skill").
Defining the Hero
The Persona: Janice Sanders
To ground the narrative, we defined a specific persona representing the core Career Switcher demographic.
Middle-school English Teacher Turned Security Engineer
Janice grew up in a small town and initially thought a tech career was "above" her. After working as a middle school English and writing teacher for five years, she decided to make a change during the pandemic. While teaching full-time, she studied for the CompTIA Security+ exam and, in December 2020, quit her job to pursue a career in cybersecurity. She landed her first role as a security analyst, and she credits the foundational knowledge gained from studying for the CompTIA Security+ exam with helping her get a foothold in a higher-level role. Her advice to others considering a career change is to take a risk and find mentors to help along the way.

Storyboard
The Driver: Janice isn't just looking for money; she is seeking "fresh starts after feeling stuck in a rut" and "job security in a rapidly evolving economy".
The Confidence Gap: Her biggest barriers are internal myths: "I don't have the skills," "Tech requires a 4-year degree," or "It takes too much time and money".
The Goal: The campaign needed to directly dismantle these myths, proving that her existing transferable skills count and that certification is the equalizer.

Visual Development
The Career Journey Illustrated
Storyboarding the Narrative The "Tech Intent" concept required a human touch. We chose an artist, Maya Scarpa, who has a hand-drawn illustration style to align with the campaign’s "empowering, clear, and supportive" tone of voice.
Early concepts focused on visual metaphors, such as ladders, bridges, and doorways, to represent the transition.
Pacing for Social: The storyboards were designed to work as a swipeable static carousel for LinkedIn and Meta, ensuring the "hook" happened in the first 2 seconds.
The Final Narrative
Change your career, change your life.
Take the next first step in your career with CompTIA
Janice’s journey started with a passion for learning and a dream of working in technology, despite her initial doubts about breaking into the field.
Like many people, she followed a traditional career path. She studied Business Administration in college and eventually became an enrollment advisor at a local school.
After that, she became a middle school English teacher, sharing her passion for learning with her students for five steady years.
Then the pandemic hit.
Then the pandemic hit.
Suddenly, her stable world was thrown into chaos.
Remote teaching posed its own challenges, and the uncertainty of the world led her to a pressing question about her future:
What now?
This moment marked a crisis point for many careers.
You desire change, but you hesitate when considering the commitment required: four years of schooling, the costs involved, the risks of starting over. All of it can be paralyzing.
Janice felt that pressure, worrying about her family and the logistics of entering an entirely new field.
Thoughts raced through her mind:
Can I do it? What if I’m not smart enough? Will I have to start all over again?
She revisited her long-held dream of working in cybersecurity. She realized that the goal wasn’t necessarily a four-year degree; it was simply to secure a new job. The solution didn’t have to be a slow or expensive path. Instead, it could be something more focused and efficient.

She decided to pursue a CompTIA certification.
Janice didn’t wait. She dove in while continuing to teach full-time during the day, dedicating her evenings to studying for the Security+ certification. Balancing work and study required a lot of focus, but using CompTIA's learning products made it easier for her to manage her time.
Earning her CompTIA certification became the key that opened the door to her future in tech with her existing skills in organization, time management, communication, leadership, and critical thinking.
Taking a leap of faith, Janice left the classroom, applied for tech roles, and quickly secured her first position as a Security Analyst.

Today, she enjoys the flexibility of working remotely as a Security Engineer. This career shift has not only changed her job title but also improved her family's quality of life.

Social Campaign Execution
To drive awareness among career-switchers, I adapted the narrative into carousels for LinkedIn and Meta. The first card serves as the emotional hook to stop the scroll, while subsequent cards guide the user through the story's progression, with various CTAs to visit the landing page and other areas within the CompTIA website.

Campaign Launch
Status: Campaign in development.
Deliverables: Integrated campaign including Social Video (LinkedIn/Meta), Carousel Ads, and Web Landing Page assets
Thematic Alignment: A Late December/Early January launch mirrors the narrative timeline of the persona, Janice, who "in December 2020, quit her job to pursue a career in cybersecurity". This timing aligns with the New Year's resolution mindset of the target audience, seeking a fresh start.
